9 Places on Earth Known for Mysterious Disappearances

9 Places on Earth Known for Mysterious Disappearances

The radius of earth, as measured from the equator, is 3,963 miles. The surface area of earth is measured at 196.9 million square miles. And the land area of earth is more than 57 million square miles. That’s a lot of ground to cover. Which is why it should come as no surprise that people and vessels go missing every day.

What might surprise you is that there are areas around the globe that have become known as “disappearance hot spots.” These are areas where people, planes, and ships vanish without a trace.

Despite advances in technology and valiant search efforts when a disappearance occurs, there is still little explanation for what happens in these areas listed below. Theories abound and researchers are constantly investigating “anomalies,” but there remains a lack of consensus for what causes these particular places to have a greater number of unexplained disappearances.

Below are some geographical areas where disappearing without a trace is not as uncommon as you may think:

1. The Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda triangle, also known as the “Devil’s Triangle,’ is in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean and covers an area roughly the size of the state of Alaska. It is notorious for the many ships and planes that mysteriously disappear within its boundaries. While numbers can vary, it is estimated that 325 planes and 1,200 ships have disappeared with the boundaries of the Bermuda Triangle since 1930.

2. The Devil's Sea

The Devil's Sea

The Devil’s Sea, also known as the “Dragons Triangle,” is located in the western Pacific Ocean between Japan, Guam, and the Philippines. Similar to the Bermuda triangle, Devil’s Sea is infamous for being the site of multiple mysterious disappearances and odd phenomena. Declared an “unsafe” area by the government of Japan in 1952, the mysterious disappearances in Devil’s Sea date back all the way to 1274 AD.

Lake Superior

Lake Superior

Lake Superior is the largest of the five great lakes and is the world’s largest lake by surface area. Located on the border between Canada and the United States, Lake Superior is known for its natural beauty and is a destination many outdoor activities like boating, fishing, and hiking. However, it also has a reputation for swallowing ships and plane and the “never giving up her dead.” Even ships known to have been lost during rough weather remain unfound.

4. The Alaska Triangle

The Alaska Triangle

The Alaska Triangle is a region in eastern Alaska that extends from Juneau to Anchorage to Barrow and encompasses a small portion of Canada’s Yukon Territory. It has become known for its high rates of disappearances since 1988. According to official numbers, the Alaska Triangle has a missing persons rate that is double the USA national average. While there is no one reason this area claims so many disappearances, the harsh conditions and remote access make search and rescue efforts extremely difficult.

5. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite

Yosemite National Park is in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. It was designated as a national park on October 1, 1890, making it one of the earliest national parks in the United States. It covers 1,187 square miles and is known for its stunning cliffs and waterfalls. Since its inception as a National Park, 775 people have been reported missing, 140 of these cases have never been solved.

6. Yellowhead Highway, Canada

Yellowhead Highway

Yellowhead Highway/Highway 16 and is a major highway in Canada that stretches across the country. It is known for its scenic beauty and provides access to several national parks. However, in recent years a 447 mile stretch of this highway has become known as the “Highway of Tears” due to the rise in disappearances that have been occurring in this area. The exact number of disappearances is in dispute because the majority or those that disappear come from indigenous or rural communities and reporting varies.

7. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains

Located in the southeastern part of the United States, on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, lies the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain range. The Great Smokey Mountains National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the United States with an estimated 12 million visitors in 2022. The park contains hundreds of miles of trails leading in and out of deep, old-growth, wooded mountain ranges. With so much dense terrain is it surprising that some people enter the park never to be seen again?

8. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an island nation located of the east coast of India. It is known for its rainforest and beautiful beaches, but Sri Lanka has also been ravaged by civil conflicts that lasted for almost 30 years and ended in 2009. During this time of fighting between government and militant factions, tens of thousands of citizens went missing and are still unfound. The UN has classified these disappearance as “enforced disappearance’ and Sri Lanka still has the second-highest rate.

Perhaps we will one day have a scientific answer for these mysterious locations. But until then, the broadest explanations tend to involve some type of a supernatural cause. And while those explanations range from aliens to black holes to pathways to the underworld, it might not be a leap for you to believe that supernatural things do occur. Even though they might occur in small ways today, the fact is that there is a coming supernatural event that will involve a Great Disappearance. It has been predicated for thousands of years, but it’s not a mystery to those who know of its coming—especially since there is a geographical spot that holds an important piece of the puzzle to its mystery…

9. The Jezreel Valley

Jezreel Valley

Located in northern Israel, the Plain of Megiddo is 12 miles wide and 19 miles long. Though it is not known today for mysterious disappearances, it is known for its biblical significance. Many battles in the Old Testament were fought here and it is prophesied to be the location where the final battle on earth between God and the forces of evil will take place. Nickamed “Armageddon” the Plain of Megiddo/Valley of Jezreel will one day be the place for the greatest disappearance of all time.
